The racing season is one of my favourite times of the year – the glitz, the glamour, and of course, the fashion. Knowing how to dress for the huge range of racing events around New Zealand is important. Race day etiquette combines the formal dress code and mannerisms passed down by generations of racing club society members. It’s all about tradition, elegance and style. Classy and dignified defines racing fashion. Here are a few of my tips to get you ready for our upcoming race meets!
Headwear
The most notable look of race day fashion would have to be the fascinator. Delicate, feminine and creative, the fascinator adds a touch of edginess and sophistication to your outfit. For good quality fascinators, try Smith and Caughies or David Jones. If fascinators aren’t your thing, hats make a great alternative. Think wide brimmed with floral or bow detailing, or small, traditional hats like the cloche or pillbox.
Accessories
It’s all about the accessories at the races. They need to match your outfit so your overall look is cohesive. A small clutch or cross body bag is a sound option for carrying your things, as larger ones detract from your ensemble. Keep your jewellery simple, with small earrings and rings, and a delicate bracelet or watch. If your outfit consists of quite simple colours, gloves are a nice addition to spice things up – elbow length for ultimate elegance or short for a more a subtle look. For the Spring/Summer seasons, you’ll want a pair of striking designer sunglasses, too. Karen Walker will get you sorted on that front.
Dress
Going to the races is the best excuse to wear your most fabulous dress, or to go out and buy one. In keeping with the classy, traditional look, avoid anything that sits more than a few centimetres above the knee. For Spring and Summer, floral patterns or bold, bright colours are perfect. You want to stand out in the crowd while remaining elegant. A black and white colour theme never fails, so keep that in mind when you’re out shopping. For a classy alternative, two piece suits are great.
Hair and Makeup
Race day fashion is about your whole look, not just your clothing and accessories. Your hair and makeup is equally important. Keep your makeup simple, focusing on just one area for a more natural look. Smokey eyes are gorgeous, and you can’t beat red lips if you’re short on ideas. Use a light mineral powder foundation or even a tinted moisturiser instead of heavy liquid foundation. When it comes to hair, remember you’re going for a classic look. Soft curls are always gorgeous, or a simple swept back up do. A messy side braid or sleeked-back, tight pony tail is an elegant, more contemporary option.
