We all have bad days, or bad moments during good days. While there’s little you can do to prevent those unpleasant daily instances from happening to you, it is possible to refuse to be brought down by them. I thought I’d share with you a few of the little things that boost my mood or make me smile – try them the next time you’re having a bad moment!
Flowers
There is nothing that lifts my mood as quickly as the smell and sight of fresh flowers. Whether it’s strolling through Christchurch’s beautiful botanical gardens or placing a bought bouquet on my desk at work, I instantly feel better! This isn’t surprising, since flowers have actually been scientifically proven to positively affect human behaviour and emotions. As Rugters’ Professor of Psychology Jeannette Haviland-Jones notes, being around flowers increases feelings of happiness and satisfaction. So now you have an even better reason to make that partner of yours buy you a bouquet!
Clean Sheets
It’s the little things, right? I’m sure I’m not the only one who loves getting into a newly made bed with fresh, clean sheets. Is it that pristine smell, or the crisp feel? Who knows! Whatever it is, hopping into a bed and instantly feeling cosy and satisfied is the perfect way to end your day, and the perfect way to start the next one!
Pudding
While some may find this the most effective way to improve your day, I wouldn’t recommend making it your most regular. It’s true, though – having a delicious dessert will definitely make you feel happier! If you’re craving sweetness, I find it hard to go past a good apple and rhubarb crumble or pear pie. For the chocolate lovers, mousse is a failsafe choice. However, there are also healthier options out there – at the moment I’m loving fresh strawberries and blueberries with homemade vanilla custard. Yum!
Baths
With all the trimmings, of course. Baths are just the best way to relax and recharge in the comfort of your own home and without spending a dime. I love to drop some lavender oil in the water and light a few candles. If you want a good steam, keep all of the windows closed and make sure the water is hot! Giving myself this timeout never fails to improve my day, leaving me feeling rested and pampered.
Favourite Song
Probably the easiest of my tips – listen to your favourite song! If you have a few, listen to all of them, and definitely sing along if you can. Everyone has at least one song that immediately brightens their mood when they hear it, so do yourself a favour and buy that tune, then play until your emotions are high!
