We all love going to the movies, and we all have actresses that we view as style icons. Sometimes we like a film because of its dialogue, sometimes because of its story, sometimes because of its cast – and sometimes because of its fashion. Looking back at some of Hollywood’s greatest movies is a fantastic way to gain inspiration and refresh your look. I’ve selected a few of my favourite films that display amazing, timeless fashion to share with you – try going through some of your own favourites for more ideas!
High Society
This gem from 1956 stars the beautiful Grace Kelly in the role of Tracy, a fierce woman still in love with her ex-husband but engaged to another man. Kelly’s style is flawless – whether she’s wearing high-waisted trousers and a buttoned blouse or a long, glamourous evening gown she spells elegance and confidence. If you want a classic look, garner some tips by watching this film.
Funny Face
There is no one with a more effortless style than Audrey Hepburn, and this is epitomised in the 1957 musical Funny Face. When we are first introduced to Audrey’s character Jo it is as a quiet, unfeminine bookstore assistant. This all changes when her unusual features are spotted by a fashion magazine and she is sent to Paris to model. From the striking ball gowns and suits of the fashion shoots, to the fail-safe slack-and-sweater combination of her everyday wear, Audrey is a symbol of class.
Bonnie and Clyde
In 1967 Faye Dunaway blew audiences away with her captivating performance as the sassy, sexy Bonnie Parker. Dressed in the midi-length skirts and tailored jackets of Depression-era America, her performance saw an influx of 1930s fashion in clothing stores around the country. Dunaway’s look had a unique edge with the addition of berets and neckerchiefs, something that can be easily added to an outfit to give it a stylish flare.
The Great Gatsby
A more recent example of inspiring fashion in film can be found in the 2013 adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. Whether you watched it for the depiction of the Roaring Twenties, to uncover the mystery of Jay Gatsby, or purely to see Leo looking dapper in an array of fine suits, the glitz and the glamour of the costumes in this film are unavoidable. Carey Mulligan and Elizabeth Debicki, as Daisy and Jordan, are radiant in opulent shift dresses and sparkling accessories. They show that excess can work – if it is executed carefully. Who knew that headbands could be so elegant!
The Age of Adaline
Blake Lively is gorgeous as the ageless Adaline Bowman in this 2015 drama. Her style is a blend of classic and retro fashion, mixing heavy coats with modest dresses and sensible mary jane heels. Blake shows how to pull vintage off in a contemporary setting, pairing thick turtlenecks with skirts and adding timeless accessories like the square leather purse. If you are looking for hairstyle inspiration, this is also a great film to watch.
