Fashion Tips to Flatter any Body Type

Angela Stone • Oct 09, 2014

Not all trends, designs and fabrics will flatter your body type, so it is essential that you steer clear of styles that just don’t do your figure justice. Whether you have an athletic, curvy or petite shape, these tricks will ensure you look your best all day and night long!

How to style your figure:

Athletic

The key to styling an athletic figure is to create curves and add definition. To accentuate your slender physique, emphasise your middle to create the illusion of a fuller bust and hips. Garments with a drop waist, an empire line and a v neck will help to define your waist. Wide belts, lace, satin, velvet and cotton will also add complexity to your silhouette. Don’t be afraid to experiment with intricate patterns and detailing.

– Stripes, florals and geometric patterns will add depth.

Ruffles, beading and bows will help to boost your gorgeous figure.

– Feminine flourishes like pleats and peplums will add ladylike definition.

– Choose classic styles and neutral colours to tone down your outfit.

Curvy

To accentuate your figure, choose formfitting dresses and skirts that are cut diagonally. This should draw all attention to your slim waist.Choose structured garments and A-Line styles as they will downplay your lower half.

Colour blocking is a great slimming technique, a dress that cinches in at the waist will highlight your feminine figure. Wear a belt that includes embellishments such as beading and ruching.

– Black is always flattering but you can never go wrong by adding a touch of colour to your ensemble. Avoid bold patterns and opt for neutrals like brown, black and navy.

– When it comes to dressing for a night out, don’t be afraid to show a bit of skin.

– Remember if you are going to wear a garment that reveals your legs make sure you cover your cleavage (vice versa).

Full-Figure

Draping fabrics around different parts of your body will aid you in highlighting and hiding areas of your figure. Pliable fabrics like jersey are easy to style. Tailored pieces like straight skirts, trousers and wrap dresses will add definition to your waist. Keep your clothes frill free and sleek, choose tops that are simple, with out layers.

– Solid hues you will become your best fashion find, rich reds and jewel tones will look amazing on your figure.

– Contrasting shades like black and white will keep your look simple and fresh.

Petite

If you have a petite figure, avoid busy prints to keep your look simple and chic! Subtle embellishments will help to add personality to your outfits, although overly ornate details will detach focus from your beautiful figure.

– Fabrics like chiffon, velvet and silk will help to add structure in all the right places.

– Avoid lots of layers as they are most likely to overwhelm your figure.

May Newsletter 2023 Hi friends! Is your winter wardrobe in check? One thing people often forget to pay attention to is accessories, but this is such a fun way of dressing for the colder weather. These are the Winter Accessory Trends you should be aware of: Big scarves are in – and I mean big! Wrap it around your neck a bunch of times, or wear it like a shawl for a chic look. You’ll be cosier than ever! If you already have an oversized handbag, you’re in luck – this trend will be everywhere this winter. I love a coloured bag for a statement, and since red is hot right now, a large red bag is going to look extra chic. Own a pair of heeled boots? Time to bring those babies out. This season a stiletto heel is favoured over a chunky heel, but both are strong options and will keep your feet cozy. Love fashion and want to learn more? Join me on my next Fashion Stylist Course .
