What To Wear: Races

New Zealand Cup and Show week is nearly upon us and that can mean only one thing; beautiful dresses, amazing fascinators and a long hot summer of outdoor events and special occasion dressing.

The fashion stakes run almost as high as the horse racing during Cup Week with standalone events making it the perfect opportunity to wear your most fabulous outfit.

British aristocrats and royalty were among the first to make going to the races a sophisticated, fashionable and glamorous affair and today is no different. There is no doubt that fashion and the races are intertwined and with fashion trends changing every season it is essential to stay on the cutting edge. To prevent the inevitable “what should I wear?” dilemma, I have put together five key style ideas to help you make the dress circle at this seasons’ races.

Pastel Colours

J Mendel and DKNY are only few of the designers to pick pastels as a must have for the upcoming season. The favourite colours range from baby blue, pastel pink, pale yellow and softest lilac – spring’s prettiest palette is mesmerising.

The Neoprene skirt

A well-made neoprene skirt can do wonders for your outfit, adding texture to your look and a voluminous silhouette. I would recommend a pastel coloured neoprene skirt to add a soft touch to your ensemble.

Flower Prints

Large floral prints have been seen across the runways of Anna Sui, Schumacher and Marcel Ostertag making this flowery statement a must have for your outfit this year. Go bold when picking your floral prints; do not shy away from a bit of colour!

Accessories can be a girls best friends but an outfits worse nightmare if done wrong, while I believe accessories can take an outfit to a whole new level it is important to select the right pieces. A small fascinator can complement an outfit and add colour. Alternatively an oversized clutch or belt can simply do wonders. I recommend being brave and choosing a contrasting colour. The perfect contrast can make an outfit ‘pop’.

For the Boys

Bright and patterned socks are in, try blue with white polka dots to add some edge or as an alternative pocket squares to add character and colour to an outfit. Who says it only has to be black, brown and grey!

Lastly, keep your outfit well-structured and tailored for a sleek and tidy finish, there is nothing more flattering than a well fitted garment. Above all have fun and pick an outfit that best represents your personality. When you wear something, remember to wear it proudly. Good luck!

The 6 Face Shapes

Are you unsure on the perfect haircut or the best way to apply makeup to your face? Knowing your face shape can help you with styling your best asset! Read on to find out which face shape you have and Angela’s top hair style tips for you!

The Square Face Shape has a strong, square jaw line and usually an equally square hairline.

A square face shape needs layers around the jaw line. This frames the face and can camouflage a strong chin. Avoid sharp, straight lines.

If you have a square face, texture, in the form of curls or choppy ends, also helps downplay a strong jaw. You can get away with short, spiky cuts and long, sleek styles with layers that start at the jawline and continue downwards.

The Round Face shape is a full-looking face with a round chin and hairline. Widest point is at the cheeks and ears.

Elongate a round face shape with longer hair that extends below the chin. Layers on top add volume and height.

Your goal is to create less volume around the face. You also want to minimize the appearance of roundness.

Try cuts that fall just below the chin. Soft layers are great because they make the face appear slimmer and tend to remove bulk and weight from the sides. Consider wispy and tapered ends – they de-emphasize the roundness of the face.

The Oval Face Shape is only slightly narrower at the jaw line than at the temples, with a gently rounded hairline.

If you have an oval face shape, stop for a second and congratulate yourself. You’ve landed the most versatile face shape – you can wear almost any hairstyle.

No matter the length of your cut, you’ll look best with layers near your cheekbones, lips or chin; basically whatever feature you want to highlight.

A Diamond Shaped face is a cross between heart and a dramatic oval. Widest at the cheekbones, and narrow equally at the forehead and jaw line.

Go for hairstyles that add width at the chin area such as chin length bob cuts or shoulder length wispy kicked out bobs. Styles that tuck behind the ears also work well to show off a wonderful cheek bone structure.

A Heart Shaped face is wide at the temples and hairline, narrowing to a small delicate chin.

Try shoulder-length hair, adding layers from the chin down. Curl or flip out these layers to create a fuller bottom that balances a small chin. A chin-length bob also works well.

A pointy chin tends to be the focal point of the face. Draw attention to the eyes and cheekbones with a brow-grazing fringe.

The pear face shape is broad and square at the jaw line, tapering to a relatively narrow forehead.

Last but not least is the pear! This face shape looks best with volume added on top to create balance.

Layered hair looks great. Short hair should not pass the neckline, while long looks should be kept tight at the nape.

Summer Essentials

Summer is almost upon us which means it is the perfect time to start stocking up on some wardrobe essentials!

An oversized tote will become your best friend this season, it looks so chic and can carry all of your beach necessities. For a girls night out, opt for small leather studded clutch. If you are looking to make a statement, a neon purse will be the way to go.

AS Bags

An oversized hat will always be my favourite wardrobe staple (as well as a chic pair of frames). Sunglasses are the ideal accessory for Summer, so I have compiled a guide as to which shades will flatter your face shape.

Heart Shaped Face: Aviators

Round Face: Rectangle Shades

Oval Face: Cat-Eye Sunglasses

Fashion Tips to Flatter any Body Type

Not all trends, designs and fabrics will flatter your body type, so it is essential that you steer clear of styles that just don’t do your figure justice. Whether you have an athletic, curvy or petite shape, these tricks will ensure you look your best all day and night long!

How to style your figure:

The key to styling an athletic figure is to create curves and add definition. To accentuate your slender physique, emphasise your middle to create the illusion of a fuller bust and hips. Garments with a drop waist, an empire line and a v neck will help to define your waist. Wide belts, lace, satin, velvet and cotton will also add complexity to your silhouette. Don’t be afraid to experiment with intricate patterns and detailing.

– Stripes, florals and geometric patterns will add depth.

Ruffles, beading and bows will help to boost your gorgeous figure.

– Feminine flourishes like pleats and peplums will add ladylike definition.

– Choose classic styles and neutral colours to tone down your outfit.

Athletic Figure

To accentuate your figure, choose formfitting dresses and skirts that are cut diagonally. This should draw all attention to your slim waist.Choose structured garments and A-Line styles as they will downplay your lower half.

Colour blocking is a great slimming technique, a dress that cinches in at the waist will highlight your feminine figure. Wear a belt that includes embellishments such as beading and ruching.

– Black is always flattering but you can never go wrong by adding a touch of colour to your ensemble. Avoid bold patterns and opt for neutrals like brown, black and navy.

– When it comes to dressing for a night out, don’t be afraid to show a bit of skin.

– Remember if you are going to wear a garment that reveals your legs make sure you cover your cleavage (vice versa).

Curvy AS

Draping fabrics around different parts of your body will aid you in highlighting and hiding areas of your figure. Pliable fabrics like jersey are easy to style. Tailored pieces like straight skirts, trousers and wrap dresses will add definition to your waist. Keep your clothes frill free and sleek, choose tops that are simple, with out layers.

– Solid hues you will become your best fashion find, rich reds and jewel tones will look amazing on your figure.

– Contrasting shades like black and white will keep your look simple and fresh.

Full Figure AS

If you have a petite figure, avoid busy prints to keep your look simple and chic! Subtle embellishments will help to add personality to your outfits, although overly ornate details will detach focus from your beautiful figure.

– Fabrics like chiffon, velvet and silk will help to add structure in all the right places.

– Avoid lots of layers as they are most likely to overwhelm your figure.

Spring Trends: Lace

Showing up on runways and streets around the globe, Lace is staging a comeback. This gorgeous fabric is the epitome of femininity, which makes it a popular material when dressing for Spring and Summer. Hopefully these tips will make you feel more confident about wearing the fabric.

Here is how you can rock lace garments this season!

Day Time Lace

The key to wearing lace during the day is to keep things simple and elegant.  A lace pencil skirt or top worn under a blazer will instantly improve your outfit. When choosing what dresses to wear, look at the quality of the fabric. Lower quality lace is better for casual and day-to-day looks. Select a midi lace dress in neutral colours and pair with leather accessories for a fun, sophisticated and casual appearance.

An Evening Statement

The evening is the perfect time to rock a lace garment. This fabric embodies glamour and romance like no other, a black garment is a great choice if you are wanting to create a dramatic ensemble.

High quality lace is more suited to evening wear and other special occasions. Gowns and long dresses can be quite elegant and are easy to accessorise. A bold red lip and a casual hairstyle will be the only accessories you will need!

A metallic lace dress is also perfect for events. For a fun evening look, team a metallic dress with some bold accessories.

A Touch of Colour

Beautiful jewel tones, ranging from fuchsia, to emerald green and cerulean blue will instantly elevate your look.

Stray from black and white dresses and head for bolder tones. Coloured lace makes quite the statement, so pair each outfit with neutral accessories. A great alternative to the little black dress is a red lace dress, wear this timeless piece to your next party! Subtle shades of lilac, yellow and powder blue all compliment this season’s take on lace.

Sheer materials scream modern romance. A sheer dress is an easy way to make lace the focal point of your outfit. This trend will encourage you to show a bit more skin, whilst still keeping your look fresh and stylish. Balance the revealing nature of sheer lace by choosing longer hems and slips to put on underneath. If lace is too dramatic for your taste, mix your outfits up with contrasting textures. Add a leather jacket or faux fur for an electric inspired look.

All White

Ethereal white lace allows you to integrate a number of new garments into your wardrobe. From elegant ensembles to pretty tops and dainty dresses, your options are endless. If you are worried about white lace looking a bit too bridal, partner your clothes with colourful accessories or bright trims. Structured lace will help define your silhouette, select shift dresses and full-skirted designs as they are easier to style.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with lace. Whether this gorgeous material is a wardrobe staple or for special occasions only, it is an elegant and on-trend choice of fabric. Do you have any tips for styling lace dresses?
